Researchers from the University of Washington have carried out a study into the net loss of offshore glaciers in Antarctica and Greenland.

They were based on data from two space lasers. Now you can take accurate measurements on the ice cap. The result is evidence that a decrease in ice cover does indeed lead to a rise in sea level. This clearly shows the role of global warming for the environment, because at higher temperatures the water first melts the floating ice caps and then the ice on land. The conclusions are based on data collected by the satellite launched in 2018 and are compared with data from previous studies.

The Daily Mail UK quotes lead author Benjamin Smith: If you look at a glacier or icecap for a month or a year, you don’t learn much about the effects of the climate. He added that the satellites had provided data that had been disseminated for many years and had contributed to the understanding of long-term climate change.

New data from a satellite in space 300 miles away gives scientists the most accurate picture of how much ice is being lost in Antarctica, where it is located and how changes can contribute to sea level rise https://t.co/QXNnMZk5DV.

Loss of glaciers off the coast of Antarctica and Greenland

Scientists have scientifically proven that the loss of the ice shelf is strangely linked to sea level rise.

This in turn can be a disaster for the coastal population. Worse, most major cities are located on the coast, and many of them are tourist destinations. It is clear that the rise in sea level can rob them of a comfortable stay. This is the moment that environmentalists are trying to bring forward. NASA research has given credibility to what environmentalists have preached.

The working group used its technical expertise to make a realistic comparison. It took elements from the previous measurements and superimposed them on the current data from last year’s new satellite. The team then combined other data relevant to the evaluation.

According to the Daily Mail UK, one of the conclusions is that Greenland has contributed two-thirds of sea level rise to the melting of the icecap and the collapse of icebergs.

The rest came from Antarctica. The team concluded that when the ice on the shelf melts, it does not raise sea levels. De ijsplaat biedt stabiliteit aan de gletsjers en de ijskappen die erachter liggen. The platforms act as a barrier and as soon as they disappear, the ice on the ground melts and starts to sink faster. This ultimately leads to a rise in sea level.

Laser technology for mapping the Antarctic and Greenland fridge

According to ABC AU, NASA has studied the melting of the icecap in Greenland and Antarctica using state-of-the-art technology.

Thanks to the latest technologies, scientists today have more confidence in their discoveries. The ice loss is considerable and the study sheds light on various aspects of global warming. Two satellites equipped with laser altimeters helped the team to collect the necessary data. A comparison of the data from the early 2000s with the latest satellite data from 2018 and 2019 showed how the nature of the ice has changed over the years. At the moment the losses in Greenland are enormous compared to Antarctica. The former contributes to a two-thirds of sea level rise. Most of the ice loss is due to the thinning out of coastal glaciers.

Antarctica and its secrets

Antarctica is the southernmost continent about which little is known. The ice mass in this region had to be able to withstand the effects of climate change. Recently it was confronted with a nine-day heat wave that melted large quantities of ice from Eagle Island in Antarctica. It could lead to a rise in sea level. Another mystery is the hole that has arisen in Antarctica, and scientists are trying to find out the reasons for it. There is also a secret colony of 1.5 million penguins in Antarctica.
