Ian Gould, a former English judge, served as a judge in Australia’s disastrous test against South Africa in Newlands, Cape Town, in 2018. The veteran witnessed a balloon scandal in which Steve Smith, David Warner and Cameron Bancroft were suspended. Even when cricket was banned in Australia (California) Warner and Smith for a year, Bancroft was suspended for nine months.

Bancroft returned to the 2018-19 World Cup, while Warner and Smith returned to the 2019 World Cup. Gould remembered the Shambolic legend and said the sandpaper used in the forgery had no effect on red skin.

Ian Gould walks the path of memory.

If you had seen the eggs, you would have made a mistake. In the end, the sandpaper didn’t hit the bullet. They’ve been working to keep the ball clean. Once they had a larger, glossier page and then sandpaper, Gould was quoted in an interview with the Daily Telegraph as promoting his autobiography for Gunner – My Life In Cricket.

Gould was also a bit critical of the Australians and called them average people two or three years before the Newland incident. However, he also believed that what happened was a blessing for Australian cricket and only served to improve it.

I didn’t realize what the consequences would be. If you look back now, Australia probably lost control two, maybe three years ago, but not in that sense. Maybe people with difficult, talkative, fairly average behavior, called Gould.

When the director said he put something in his pants, I started laughing because it didn’t sound right. The result, of course, is the improvement in Australian cricket – and cricket in general, he said.

After the conviction of Smith, Bancroft and Warner, the trio was sent home in the middle of a tour of South Africa. Tim Payne later became Australian captain and replaced Smith. Even Warner has been relieved of his vice-captainage.

Then three cricketers attended press conferences where they collapsed and apologized for their failure. Smith and Warner have been able to regain their authority, while Bancroft has been going through difficult times lately.
